A wireframing tool that is really great for creating visual documentation when dealing with information architecture (IA). It is currently my wireframing tool of choice although there is one downside... when transforming grouped symbols and stencils, text doesn't resize on the fly. The program does make up for this error with great templating options, shared layers and intuitive interface. The pro version also supports Microsoft VISIO filetypes which is great for compatability and sharing. Supported only by Mac sorry PC.

An extremely simple yet great tool for quickly and effectively creating a digital budget breakdown. The project elements are fully customizable and whilst the interface is online, you can still create a print ready pdf of your estimations. This kind of tool is great for a freelancer or small operation. The pre populated fields can give you a solid starting point on the elements of your project you should be effectively quoting on.

An invaluable tool to define your market base and analyze your competition with quantifiable data to position yourself in the digital marketplace. Once you've analyzed who your customer base is, Quantcast can also help you define where to extend them to and how to access them. The cornerstone of Quantcast is to define your audience and then find where your missing them. The only downfall of course is that the tool is US based, a massive let down really. It still remains useful to replicate the results and apply to an Australian alternative, because hey let's face it we share a common point or two with the states. It gets three stars only because of it's US centric status, however it is such a ground breaking tool that we feel it deserves to make the ranks of our resource page.

This does seem a little gimmicky but if your looking for a quick snapshot of your company name across the board it does illustrate quite well. Basically it searches your name and determines the status of it's existence throughout social media, Search Engines and Domain availability, so it's quite the handy one. It also measures your names performance on a percentage basis within the social media ranks, how much it's represented throughout the twitter's and face book's of this world. The tool really does come into it's own when you are creating a brand name from scratch and your looking for something unique and somewhat unsaturated. It's harsh and it will tell it how it is if you choose a name that is too generic. It gets three and a half stars mainly for it's great interface and quick illustrative snapshot of a name.

Email marketing is fast becoming the cornerstone of supportive collateral for any digital presence. The campaign monitor interface allows you to design, upload and send HTML emails to your customer database, quickly, seamlessly and cued to your time schedule. The platform allows for testing and quick delivery and can also tie into your website sign up form to automatically populate your customer database. Once the campaign has been delivered you can access an array of analytics that will inform you who the message reached, who clicked where and bounce rates, allowing you to further tweak your customer database potential. You can also have a base template upon which all your HTML emails are created without requiring any coding knowledge. Four and a half stars because it is hands down the best on the market.

A visual representation of the most and the least powerful keywords in your site. This is a great and fun way to quickly assess how your keywords look particularly to search engine robots. It can also highlight words that perhaps you should be avoiding but are coming up in your text despite your efforts. Wordle uses your source code so is a fairly good representation of how spiders would see your site.

A checklist and report creating site that lets you tick all the boxes before heading live with your website. Some of the options seem obvious..eg. spelling mistakes but it is great practice to truly go through all your options before pressing the go button. I think all projects can benefit from this handy simple resource. The interface is well done, it allows commenting functionality and customization of your list options. There is also some styling ajax happening as well which is almost worth a check of it's own accord.

Okay so this has absoloutly nothing to do with digital production but it's cool and this is my party! Urban reforestation is a project currently taking place in the docklands as a sustainable urban farm and garden. It's bringing the environment back in to the city and creating a space to educate and inspire a community to live greener and better lives. The farms head quarters are located at 27 Merchant St in the Docklands. If your in Melbourne come down and lend a hand and see what creating a community around an awesome idea is all about.

A great resource for testing your design for it's actual effectiveness with calls to action, message delivery and brand identity. Basically it works by allowing your designs to be viewed by people from around the world who are then quizzed on important elements of the design. It works on a karma basis, so you do a few tests yourself to keep the ball rolling. This is a great tool for determining AB tests..which is posh for 'is design A better than design B'. The tests can take multiple forms, a click test to determine which areas stand out the most or a pop quiz about the meaning of the websites design. Four stars for it's great ability to give you an insight into the effectiveness of a web design.

PHPBB creates communities, that is it's a forum tool that allows you to plugin a membership or non membership based forum on to your site. This is so important for creating a discussion cloud of users who aren't just flippantly passing through. I mean why not stop make a cup of tea and chat. PHPBB is open source which means it is created by a community of developers and which also means it is free...wow...you have to love this world. With this tool you can either navigate the flow of discussion by moderating and creating pre existing chat topics or you can throw caution to the wind and let it all be, you choose the level of control through a clean administrative interface. This tool gets 4 stars and after that rant the only reason it hold out on the elusive 5 is that A . there is no such thing as perfection and B. I rarely see the interface deeply customized outside of it's default format.

Project Management software that is great for managing milestones with multitudes of people, assigning deadlines, tasks and goal creation. Project management software is crucial in larger projects particularly when many people are working towards the same goal. It sets reminders, allows file sharing, message boards and the the all lucrative time tracking which is essential for effective budgeting and in turn invoicing. Base camp in my experience has been one of the cleanest project management interfaces around, with intuitive use and visual reminders when the heat is on. Interestingly there are a few neat iphone apps that can be plugged in with basecamp so your project status can get seriously mobile.
